Wenders nem véletlenül forgatja éppen akkor road-movie-ját, hiszen akkoriban zárták be arrafelé, sorban a mozikat, a vetítőtermeket. Wenders 1976-os filmje az elhagyott vagy átépített vidéki mozikkal Peter Bogdanovich "Az utolsó mozielőadás"-ának hangulatát idézi.

Hirayama Wataru úr dolgos hétköznapjait barátai és ismerősei színesítik, akik különféle családi problémáikban kérnek Hirayama úrtól tanácsot. Ezen problémák között leggyakrabban a barátok, ismerősök gyermekeinek, akik mind lányok, a házassággal kapcsolatos a szüleiktől teljesen eltérő hozzáállásuk áll, ugyanis saját maguk szeretnék kiválasztani, hogy kivel is házasodjanak össze. Hirayama úrról már a film legelején kiderül, hogy ő még a Japánban „hagyományos” módon kötött házasságot, azaz a szülők által kijelölt hölggyel, így ezen – némileg negatív - tapasztalat birtokában osztogatja a tanácsokat. Ismerősei nagyon szeretik emiatt, mert a nyugodt és tárgyilagos Hirayama igyekszik mindkét fél álláspontját végiggondolva tanácsot adni. Mindez egészen addig teljesen rendben is van, amikor is egy ismeretlen férfi keresi fel az irodájában és közli vele, hogy el szeretné venni a lányát feleségül.
